The harmonic balancer is actually very easy to do on the deck. There is a good write up at on a site, the two guys one...

The two bits of magic that I would add are:

purchase an inexpensive box box 10MM wrench, put this in a vise if you have one, and hit with a hammer to bend it jut a little so that the handle and the box are on the same plane and NOT with degrees difference between them.

purchase an inexpensive 1/2 drive socket (I used 1 and 3/16" closest I could find) and cut it down with a hacksaw with new blade. again used my vise.

You will also need an 18" 1/2 breaker bar and a 4 foot or longer piece of pipe that will slip over the breaker bar handle.

The write up on the two guys site is very good.

basic over view is as follows:

(if you have changed the water pump... you will be working towards that point)

using that bent 10mm box wrench break the bolts on the AC compressor wheel, the offset is perfect to get in there. I like to remove the plugs so that I can use the cut down 1/2 socket to rotate the engine to get the 10 mm guys near the top easier to do them. just break the loose

now also loosen the similar 10mm bolts in the water pump pulley

next remove all of the belts and AND the plate and idler pulley for the A/C pump too.

take the two hex bolts at the A/C compressor bracket along with the sleeves out, the 12 mm head bolt at the other end of the bracket down in the whole hopefully is loose, if you have to loosen it a bit to pull the bracket up DO NOT USE A RATCHETING WRENCH IT WILL GET STUCK, use a box end and do it. pull the AC pump and bracket up and lay over onto the fresh air in box on the right side of the car

Remove the water pump pulley from the water pump

Remove the A/C pulley from the end of the harmonic balancer, if you have fat fingers buy your kid or wife a treat and have them unscrew them, the are already finger tight

put the cut socket on breaker bar onto the bolt in the HB (harmonic balancer) clocked as far to right side of car as possible. HAVE YOUR ASSISTANT IN THE CAR, IN FOUR GEAR, EMERGENCY BREAK ON AND FOOT ON BREAK PEDAL HARD. put pipe on breaker bar and pull towards you, it will move, sometimes with a loud TINK and sometimes it will just move and fake you out. reposition and pull again. repeat until finger tight and remove. the HB will just slide off the shaft, it may be in two pieces if completely shot.

I like to put some alignment lines in the pulley V with a Sharpie on the bolt holes, helps to align the pulley bolt holes with the threads in the HB.

reverse to do it

if you have replaced a water pump and all of your belts in the past...
this is about another 30 minutes of work over that. you do not move the alternator save to loosen the belts (17MM needed here), you do not move the water pump save to remove the pulley. you can loop a belt around the pulley and pull on it as friction to stop it from moving as you tighten the 10mm bolts

BE SURE AND TIGHTEN THE HB BOLT AS TIGHT AS POSSIBLE USING THE BREAKER BAR AND THE EXTENTION PIPE. SAME SET UP AS REMOVAL.

Turbo and N/A are done the same way with 2 exceptions, bolt head is different size and the NA uses a spacer in the stack. procedure is the same to R & R. If you want pictures email me. thesaabguy at cox dot net.
