New head gasket & harmonic balancer engine swap? Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Mon, 14 Jun 2010 12:11:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm looking for the board's opinion here:
My noise issues of a couple of weeks ago turned out to be piston slap and I am swapping out the engine since the $1100 is about what the machine shop, parts etc would run, and I want to minimize my car's downtime.
I bought a used 1989 engine with 84,000 miles on it for my 1990 900T. I am replacing all of the rubber components on the new engine before it goes into the car, including the timing chain guides, plus other gaskets that are hard to get at, and new exhaust manifold studs.
I replaced the head gasket on my last engine at about 130K when it failed in dramatic fashion, and have never replaced the harmonic balancer (still strong at 185K. So.......
I'm on the fence about the harmonic balancer and head gasket, since they are expensive parts and can be done with the engine in the car. What's the consensus on whether this is a good idea or not?
