Even if your pre-'88 1/2 cam caps happened to line up side to side and did yield the right clearance their original oil feed hole would of course let the oil escape. If by shear coincidence they fit and you somehow plugged the hole the later caps are still a better choice because they have a full surface to better support the up force from the cam. Probably one of the main reasons Saab went to the internal oiling is so the critical surface of the cam cap wasn't cut in half like the early ones are. These caps are as you know self aligning so if you had enough of the later ones you could match them up until you got the clearances right. When I do this I use an expanding mandrel to center the cap so I get an accurate vertical measurement. Actually the big question, is the cap that locates the distributor missing as well? If it is that one's more difficult to replace as it's doweled rather than self aligning.
