You could always put regular foam-backed headliner material on and then glue the fabric of your choice over the top of that. Pretty much the same as putting foam on first, except that it should be easier to glue fabric to fabric rather than fabric to foam. be sure not to over-glue the finish fabric. The spray glue could penetrate through to the finished surface and make an unsightly mess. Best to do a few tests firs before doing the finished headliner.
