Likely the cable broke. They are still available from a couple site sponsors.
If you remove the driver's side speaker grill, you can reach in and disconnect the cable from the back of the gauge. Look at the end of the drive shaft and see if it is rounded off (supposed to be square). If you can get a finger on it, try to spin it (without pulling it out). If you can spin it, the drive cable is broken.
After the cable exits the gauge, it goes through a retaining clip on the firewall--unclip that. Then it passes through a gromit in the firewall. Pull the whole gromit out with the cable from the engine-bay side of the firewall. Then follow the cable down to it's connection at the transmission. There is a little metal retainer with a single 12mm bolt holding the pinion in the transmission. Take that off and the pinion and cable should come right out. Put the new one in in reverse order.
