I would make sure that this part is bad first of all. You could take the console off to wiggle the shaft to see if there is any lost motion.
If the shaft is indeed loose, then you'll have to take it out by disconnecting the shift coupling on the transmission. That might be your problem anyway.....the shift coupling that is...
As I recall, you have a pre 1991 car -- the 1991 and up cars have a different shifter that has a better feel to it, and you could have a short shifter made from it making the shifting more precise.
If you need the special tool for the triangular nuts, I have one that was made with a magnetized insert so you don't loose the nuts like turbocon86 suggested. Let me know, and I can mail it to you. Or you can buy one like I did from Frank Myers aka Saab Stalker...:-)
