To replace the idler with the unit in the car you remove the side cover plate and rear cover plate, the reverse engagement lever, both inner drivers (that requires unbolting the ball joints and swinging the steering knuckles out) and drop out the differential. Then you reach in there and remove the bolt that secures the bracket which locks the reverse idler and counter gear shafts. You can then draw the reverse idler shaft back and that releases the reverse idler to be removed through the side access. The you reverse the process with the new idler. That's the condensed version.
