Is my gearbox a gonner?

I have a rust free '88t, that has been a bit of a resto project/ daily driver, with a '92 N/A 5 speed gearbox that my indie just looked over and installed in December. I've always been uneasy about this gearbox as in 4th and 5th, it would always make a tuning fork-like hum while cruising with my foot on the accelerator. Mechanic listened to is but was positive that it wasn't pinion bearing. (I have a bad gut feeling, regardless.)
Anyway, tonight, while on an exit ramp, I was in 4th, over-running/not accelerating and I noticed a jackhammer sound + feel through the shifter. My first thought was that pass side axle finally completely broke (haven't gotten around to swapping it) However, it didn't make the sound while accelerating... I tried accelerating and over-running all other gears and everything else is normal.
What happened? This is sickening as I've experienced gearbox failures twice already with different c900s... between my fiancee and I, this is currently our only working (or not) car :/
Thanks
-Ian
P.S. my door latch issue seems so livable suddenly. hah
