rebuilding the 8V power steering pump. Posted by PaulS [Email] ![]() ![]() |
The p/s pump on my 84T was leaking and I did not want to mess with a used one (which would also be at least 26 years old) or a rebuilt one.
I decided to rebuild mine with a $15.00 rebuild kit that "everyone" sells. The 8V cars used a "Saginaw" pump that was made by GM and was common on GM, Ford and Chrysler cars.
There are several rebuild guides on the internet and they seem accurate. I used the shop manual from my 1975 Plymouth that uses the same pump (with different mounting points).
The rebuild was surprisingly easy and went well. The pump functions well and no longer leaks. You will need a puller and installer for the pulley. I believe AutoZone will let you borrow the puller. The installer is nothing more than a bolt with a big washer. (On mine the bolt hole is standard thread, not metric).
All of the rebuild guides warn to install the pump vanes correctly. They talk of a rounded side and a square side. My vanes appeared to be rounded on both sides. I installed them "at random" to no ill affect.
Also the rebuild kit includes a shaft bushing which I did not replace because a.) I was doing a rebuild because of seal leaks and b.) it looked hard to replace.
Conclusion: Rebuilding the 8V pump is not hard and is a cheap fix for a leaky pump. The only real "gotcha" is having the ability to remove and re-install the pump pulley.
