I also have a 1990 Talledega Red SPG. I have done a total respray, put in a new headliner, JAK exhaust & EPROM, APC, 16" aeros, new dash, on and on and on...
I have $14k invested total, maybe less. That includes the purchase price of the Saab (in 2006). I had one light hearted offer for $10k, and a serious offer for $12k (he went and paid 5-figures for another SPG I am told), obviously I am not interested in selling.
I think these cars are worth the time and money, if you love them and get joy out of them. They are cheaper than many other hobbies, especially if you are handy with a wrench. I consider it therapy. Even rust can be handled to some extent. It is a rare Saab that has none these days.
I can give you recs on two paint shops in Annapolis, one did my total respray for $4k in '08 and it still shines like new. The other I have no experience with, but gets good reviews and costs a little more than the shop I used.
