Count me among the auto-box haters. I'm 0 for 2-- one died at ~125k mi, the other at a respectable 220k mi or so. Two observations may be relevant to your dilemma: First, both were in 16v NA '93s which had presumably been driven more gently than a comparable turbo-equipped model. I obviously don't know the history of the car you're looking at, but I can tell you that for the brief time that I owned an '88T I could barely keep my foot off of the accelerator, I drove it MUCH harder than I've driven any of my NA editions. Second, once shifting issues started, no end-of-life care was effective. I changed the fluid and filter, I had the bands adjusted, I tried Lucas and any number of alternative miracle cures. I may have bought a few hundred miles, but it was ultimately a waste of time and money. Finally, $1750 or so seems a bit pricey for any car with an auto. Not that you asked, but if it were me I'd bide my time and wait for a better prospect or get the price down to a level that will allow you to do the auto to manual swap WHEN it needs it.
