Weird VW Wiper Relay

So today, I went to a pull-a-part for a hooter valve, only to find that the car that had it was just pulled and crushed this morning. To counter that luck, I happened to glance in a VW Jetta and found a relay #99 on the floor. (PN 955 531a)
I picked it up and fit it to my '88 Turbo at home. Here's what boggles me- it seems to work but is buggy. I can set a delay and it'll wipe a few times, but then stops. I can reprogram it again and it'll work a few more times and repeat. At first it would only work for 2-3 swipes, but the more I played with it, the more swipes it would do. It's up to about 6 now. Any suggestions on what might be the issue?
I've passively wanted one of these for years and finally found one (darn near impossible as, apparently, the VW relay gnomes take them all at night) Kind of frustrating! :)
Thanks
-Ian
