Vacuum check valve questions

Hi,
I've got a '92 T conv. that I've had for a few years and a '93 900T hatch that I recently purchased. The '93 has some hesitation issues which I'm just starting to try to diagnose. There seem to be some differences in vacuum hoses/check valves between the 2 cars that I want to make sure are correct before proceeding too far.
First, the '93 has a larger black and white, round check valve (part #4023297) in place of the seemingly typical grey and white more elongated 'PCV' valve (#7521313) between the intake and valve cover. I tried to find this part # online, but it appears that it is an 'air switching valve' for a new generation 900 or an electronic throttle check valve for a '90-'98 9000. Are these interchangeable? Any thoughts as to why the PO would've used this rather than the stock one? Going to replace it with the correct one if not.
Secondly, the reason why I noticed this, was that looking at my '92 900T conv., I saw the same 4024397 valve on my firewall near the brake MC connected to the intake manifold and to another buried vacuum line (but not seen on the '93). Any idea where it goes? What is its purpose?
Lastly, what would be the effect if the vacuum line running from the turbo bypass valve were connected to the front (nearer the radiator) vacuum tee on the intake manifold instead of the rear? (again, a difference between the 'new' '93 and old '92).
Thanks!
Katie
