I've had it happen. The only noise was a sqealing sound right before it happened. Sounded like a turbo spooling only more pronouced and under a lot less load than you would normally hear it. Sometimes when they freeze up while spooling, the exhaust turbine will speparate from the shaft making it feel like the turbo is spinning freely from the intake side. This is what happend to me, making it hard to diagnose the problem. The broken turbo will likely cause excessive back pressure in the engine, I would expect to see smoke coming from the PCV check valve area as well as from the dipstick tube. You will likely see lots of white (may have a slight blue coloring if seen in the right light) smoke from the exhaust as well. Another symtom was the vacuum on my boost gauge went from reading 20hg to 10-15hg when the turbo was bad. All the problems went away when I replaced the turbo.

All this being said, what makes you think your turbo it siezed? Have you removed the intake piping to see if the turbine can be moved by hand? Is the car smoking at all? Is the car producing small amounts of boost or none at all?
