I just finished doing this on my 87 TC. I did the same job on another 87T 3 years ago. This one took me one month, mostly working on weekends. The longest part for me was cleaning everything as I wanted the engine and engine compartment clean before going back in. You don't need to be a mechanic to handle this.. my day job is in accounting (trying to kill some stereotypes).
Essentials for me are a garage or space out of the weather, a good set of metric wrenches and sockets, engine hoist, good floor jack, good lighting, space heater is nice here in Mass this time of year, the Bentley manual, Saabnet, hand cleaner, and a radio - got to know all of those NPR shows pretty well.
If you are in the Boston area, I'd be willing to offer some guidance.
