I've driven the car about 20 miles since the repair. It makes the SAME whining noise as before!! I have reference marks on the inner race of the bearing, to know that it hasn't spun.

And I am at a loss for what it could be, at this point. The new bearing is a new SKF unit with the proper part number. I checked oiling, and everything seems fine (case shows good level when I stick a dipstick in, and oil sprays out when I open the round cover while running). The chains appear quite tight, especially compared to my old ones, but there is an acceptable amount of slack in them for the tensioner. As I said, I am at a loss as to what the noise could be! Glad I replaced the bearing, though. This may have been the biggest red-herring ever.
