My son wants to dump his '85 - the horror...the horror.

My son moved from northern CO to Tucson AZ. He took his trusty, reliable, newly repaired '85 3-dr with him, packing it full of junk & a bike (aka "not junk"). It's been two years since he left, & he's still got the car even though he now rides his bike 100% of the time. The car sits, unmaintained.
He's thinking of moving to NYC, & says he won't need a car once he gets there. He says he can get more for the car in AZ than he can in CO, so he wants to sell it there, then rent a U-haul to drag his junk (& bikes) back here to CO. He's not figuring the truck rental & increased fuel expense for driving the U-haul into his sale of the C900.
In reality, the car's in need of a tune-up & one of the outer CV joints should probably be replaced. He's worried it won't make it the 900 miles back home. He doesn't have the money to get it fixed & doesn't have the interest to fix it himself. (He might also now have a few too many bikes to fit into it & still be able to cram whatever junk he wants to drag back home.) If he can drive it back here, I could help him fix it up & then sell it in good condition.
So what should he do?
