The correct way to reduce ring gear backlash is to remove shims from the right (passenger) side and place them on the left (driver's) side. That way the preload (or what's left of it) on the side bearings is maintained.
It's very unusual to see one of these with excessive backlash due ONLY to normal gear wear (like never). With 197,000 miles on the unit your extra backlash is almost certainly attributable to worn out bearings. The pinion bearings are generally the first to go but they all wear out including the differential side bearings which support the differential carrier. If the unit has been run low on oil (or dry) then all bets are off, every bearing in the unit may be loose due to overheating (and high mileage) and the gears may be burned and damaged all of which can produce excessive backlash. When the pinion bearings wear out the pinion gear exhibits radial play and backlash becomes variable. I'd recommend that you have the unit rebuilt while it's still rebuildable (assuming that it is). The supply of good C900 five speeds and internal parts for them is drying up quickly. For us guys that like these cars every good five speed gearbox is precious at this point (including a 1987 unit).
