I get it that they should not be too tight, and of course not too loose to allow slippage (squeal!), but how does one set the correct amount of play, if measured by hand in the middle of the belt (between the pulleys)?
I gots a dying-water-pump-area grind/scratchy noise...occasionally, and me thinks the belts are maybe too tight, leveraging the bearings in the pump to get crunchy.
anything else in that area that could be making that noise? No AC, just did timing chain with new tensioner 2 months ago. 92 900T, 180K.
thanks.
