This is a superior set up. As you can see from 88-vert's pictures, it looks much better with a newer head unit, and, imho, its more functional. I just don't look at the radio all that much.
The holes are the same size, so it should not be a problem. The metal gauge frame I put in angles the gauges slightly, but there are number of ways to do this. No regrets at all. I'd do this on any other 900 I own.
For the most part, its very easy. Moving the wires can be a nuisance - you will probably have to remove the dash facade. Once you figure out where all the wires go, bundle them with a bit of tape, and push them down behind the knee bolster with a coat hanger. Then unscrew and move the center console to accomodate the wires and the radio.
