Pull up the plastic shift lever cover to see if the three hold down bolts are snug.If they are, take them out and pull the whole lever out. Look down through the linkage circle to see if the white plastic bottom cover "gate" is either broken or loose. If it's ok the pointed, lower tip of the shift lever is adjustable by pulling out the spring contour clip from the lever and then unscrew the pointed tip a few turns to make it longer. Replace the clip (the point has a slotted shaft that the clip has to pass through to find the hole on the other side of the lever.Slightly twist the point to orient the slot)) Re-install everything and the gate should work making 5th gear easy to find. There is a measurement for the point length but I've forgotten it. It may take a few tries to get it right. Your problem could also be a soggy (used the wrong grease) "rubber" grommet bushing at the head of the aluminum housing that locates the linkage, (pipe to the transmission,)but I doubt it.
