Bil is referring to adjusting the shift rod -- there is a procedure in Bentley. Basically, you are rigging the shifter to be in harmony with the position of the transmission shift linkage.
Ideally, you can position the transmission in 3rd gear and that would be slammed into the box ALL the way. Then when you connect the couple clamp on the shift shaft, you "pin" the shift rod on the console to line up the holes. Then you clamp the 13mm nut.
I bought the whizbang Saab tool to keep the transmission locked in third during this wonderful process. It is mentioned in Bentley as well, but you don't have to have it -- just a shop aid.
If you don't rig the shift linkage, you will be hunting or fishing for gears or won't find them when they are there to catch :-)
