I know this is a well discussed topic, but i'm running into the problem myself and although I think I know what the best financial decision is to do I thought i'd throw this out there and see a few reponses.
The background on the car is 88 turbo 140k miles on original transmission. Car runs and drives fine but transmission whines in 4th and 5th gears at speed. Under 45 and you can't notice it. The car is in great shape other wise, no rust (at all), interior is top notch (no dash cracks, seat rips or anything).
My question is, when do I do the transmission work? I dont not do my own work, meaning i'm looking at a fairly steep repair bill. I've gotten a few quotes from reputable indie shops and i'm looking at 3-4K in repairs for trans/clutch etc. Do I keep driving til it quits?
I'm at a point where do I spend the money or take the 4k and drop it in to something newer and sell the car to someone knowing it would need the work at some point. I love the car, but we all know how expensive these cars can get if you can't wrench your own.
TIA
