I did that with mine and got to 190k miles on poorly maintained car(previous owner) that started with 135k. Had it rebuilt with bigger pinion bearing. That was 50k ago. I also found a '91T engine with 82k on it with turbo and had them drop that in since they pull the engine for tranny work. New power steer rack also. Bill was $4800 for all including 82k engine. That was a lot of money to me but the 4k car stereo was a custom install so that made me want to keep the car. Not easy to put in another car plus I like the Swedish Battle Tank. Love the hatch and the character of the car and how it handles and sounds but I do get tired of the big doors, shifting in city and bad paint job. Kids want me to keep it which I will do unless another huge repair. I wouldn't spend big money now because of the economy and car prices will keep dropping if people don't have $ to buy them. Then you can get a good deal when your tranny craps out.
Good luck, KB
