Fuel Door help- am I missing something (long)?

So after a 1,500 mile trip, I discovered my fuel door won't stay shut.
I took it off to investigate.
I'm probably going to use inprecise language so I apologize in advance.
So theres a thin metal piece, kinda like a spring, that bends in a (roughly) C shape. It goes through two eyes and then just barely fits into a piece that connects into the hinge. This latter piece and the spring piece is what would pull the door shut.
Mine is not long enough to connect to a third eye below the hinge, and the spring piece also isn't long enough to stay in the hinge connector piece for any decent amount of time while driving (as I discovered).
What's more, the end that enters into the hinge connector is very rusty leading me to think that part of the spring-y piece broke off.
Is this the case? On your fuel doors, did the springy piece go through all three eyes?
If so, anyone have one they want to sell? Either that or give me a name for one of these pieces so I don't have to repeat above description as the parts department or another private seller snickers at me.
If I had a way of taking a picture and getting it online, trust me I would, but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks a bunch everybody.
The car's a 1990 SPG.
