"H engine" can refer to either 16-valve engines or 81+ 8-valve engines. It's a bit confusing: Saab 99s and early 900s had what were called "B engines." In 1981 Saab came out with H engines, which are referred to by various codes with the letter B, e.g., B201, B202, B212, etc. It is rare to refer to an H engine as an H engine -- most people use one of the codes.
B = benzin (gasoline)
20 = displacement, in deciliters
1 = one cam, that is, 8 valves
2 = two cams, that is, 16 valves
