1. Starter position. It's a matter of the rear (front in a case of C900) crankshaft plate that can easily be swapped with earlier (starter under the exh manifold) or later versions.
2. They've got an oil or water channel (I don't quite remember it well) positioned slightly a bit off so you can't just take 16V head an put it on 8V block. That's the main difficulty.
3. Drivetrain (the chain and co) can easily be swapped from one block onto another.
Oil pump was changed thru the years so you should keep one from the original block. The same goes for crankshaft pulley (you may think you can install the later pulley onto the older crankshaft - but do not fool yourself or you'll kill the pulley hub and boil up your engine).
