You would have to bump the oil pickup tube really, really hard to do any damage that would prevent any pickup at all. Did you prime the pump through the adaptor port before starting the engine? The pump must be primed or it may not pick up oil. After regasketing it's not unusual to have a small bit of sealant jam up the oil pressure relief valve also. Both of those issues can be resolved with the engine in the car (although the relief valve is a PIA). Even when the relief valve jams and the oil light stays on you have about 7 p.s.i. of oil pressure so as long as you dont rev the engine or run it for long you won't hurt the bearings or other internals at all.
