Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my experience in a similar situation was not as good as that of others that have posted here.
I had an '86 SPG and pulled the engine apart to rebuild it. Put it back together, fired it up, and everything seemed fine. So I pulled it out into the parking lot and left it to warm up, checking the coolant level periodically. Once I heard the fan cycle I looked at the instrument cluster and was shocked to see the oil light on. Long story short, a little bit of wire wheel was in the oil intake or got sucked in, and lodged in the oil pressure relief valve, holding it open. So the engine wasn't running with *no* oil pressure, but very little (once it warmed up).
Anyhow, the engine seemed fine at the time but developed a rod rap about 10,000 miles later. I ended up parting out the car since it had also developed some severe rust issues.
So my suggestion would be to examine *all* the rod and main bearing shells and journals very carefully, as well as all the cam bearings. Hopefully your experience will be better than mine!
