May have a ballast resistor near fusebox Posted by walt [Email] (#2707) [Profile/Gallery] (more from walt) on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 06:01:46 In Reply to: Update on the 80, Slyde, Thu, 24 Feb 2011 19:15:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
From Haynes 900 manual No. 84010 p.105, it shows ballast (aka: compensating) resistors between battery and pole 15 on coil. Normally coil current runs through both resistors at 1 ohms. When ignition switch is in start position, coil sees only 0.6 ohms to give a hotter spark. Resistor should be two white ceramic tubes near fusebox. One resistor should be 0.4 ohms. Other should be 0.6 ohms. Two wires are at one end, and other ends are joined together going to pin 87b on relay H in fusebox. Maybe there's an intermittent open in one of the resistors. If replacement resistors are not available, it may be possible to use a 50 Watt 1 ohm power resistor between the coil and battery bought from an electronics parts seller. However, this would bypass the hotter starting spark.
