...a good body shop. You seem to have financial capability, time (you have a nice daily driver), + a love for the car!

is there a lot of rust on the body? honestly, the original factory paint on these cars is fantastic, + it would be hard to get quality like that from a body shop. unless there are problems already, I wouldn't want to lose that factory paint... our roads have salt on them half the year, yet the rust on our 1993 is minimal, and mainly limited to areas where the factory paint was damaged + then repainted. The car gets annual oil spray...

that said...

I know a guy up here who knows a guy who does powder coating of classic cars. I don't know if this is the best route (it is not cheap!!), maybe ask Jon and other paint experts about the pros + cons, but the paint is frigging awesome. I threw a bike frame in along with one of this guy's car jobs, and the paint is as good or better than the factory paint that was on the bike. I had to strip the bike of parts and paint (has to be 100% clean metal!), and the returned frame looked like new + is rock hard + tough. No rust (it's cromo steel). All the bikes my friends did this way also look awesome and have held up well (for <$100 a bike!)... many of those bikes are winter ss commuters + see salt!

I think it comes down to how much prep you can do yourself. I don't think the actual painting itself is the hard part. If you do a really good prep job + find someone who does a quality paint job, you'll have a nice car. the paint job we got on a bare door skin (years ago) from the local Saab dealer body shop was crap, probably not even epoxy primer, and rust bubbles from under the paint! even so, I've kept up on it and it's ok + the car looks + drives nicely... so it depends on how crazy you want to be! In the worst case, things like doors are replaceable... if it's got rotted out fenders, maybe look for a rust free body... rust is killer...

some here have reported good results even using maaco + their own prep. again maybe not 100% perfect show quality, but darn nice nonetheless! perfect show quality isn't much use if you plan to drive it anyway (imho)...
