Stephen,
The decision is not difficult. Here is the most important question:
If you get rid of this car, do you plan to shop for another 900?
I fully understand about the magic bubbles. That is what kept me from painting several of my cars. I have seen people spend thousands and the paint job is wavy, or the bondo resembles oatmeal.
The bottom line, is that if you are going to go out, then you have to go for the gold. It all depends on how much you like a 900.
Personally, I would never pay a person thousand of dollars on his or her promise to give me a good job.
That is precisely, why I purchased a welder, and even an accuspray painting system( about 1500.00 at the time) It is probably why Jon Williams does a lot of work too-insurance of quality.
What you can do is rent a spot, if you don't have the space, and tackle the body/paintwork. Yet, practice on spare parts-
As for any corrosion, you can do that yourself- Eastwood is well known for good products.
If you simply lost interest in 900s, sell it.
If you are not sure, keep the whale tail, and the mint dash- for you may regret it when you buy another 900.
If you definitely plan to get another 900, yet your main concern is quality, and you are not interested in doing bodywork/paint_ sell it!
Keep the whale tail/ mint dash, louver, wheels, and look for a mint, possibly original 900 from the west coast. Follow Craigslist, in the western states. You can then fly out(if you are on the eastcoast) inspect, purchase and place all of your reserved goodies.
Again, I know exactly what you mean; your point is spot on.
Many years ago, I had a beat-up 900, that I had big dreams about. The fenders were rotted, and the car had a bad body. One day, I said to myself: this car will never turn out correctly. I ended up chucking the car, and a two or three weeks later- I had a more up to date model 900T - all original, beautiful paint with low miles. I ended up placing all of the goodies on the car, and it was truly lovely.
It all comes down to: do you plan on driving a 900?
