First of all, it is in one of the messiest parts of the car. Secondly, you need a special factory seal puller tool. The seal has a collar on it, and the special tool holds the collar and pulls it out. Keep in mind, that the shaft is in place the whole time, so there is really no other way to grab the seal. Even after the seal is out, you need to disconnect the shift coupling from the transmission to get the seal off the shaft. this job alone can be a pain because of the taper pin. That said, even with the tools, it is an easy thing to mess up, and you don't want to mess this up. Unless it is really leaking, just leave it alone.
A word of caution: Generally, when this seal leaks, it does so only when the car is going. It will not leave a puddle under the car while it is parked. What can happen is you end up running the transaxle low on oil because the leak never shows up on your driveway. I would get in the habit of checking the gearbox oil.
By the way, $300 seems fair to me.
