after many days of worry and dead convertible, I finally tackled the problem with a SAAB friend who was visiting. We made plenty of room for starters, then using a 90 angle chuck, drilled the hole and brass fitting that was stuck down smooth, 5/16. Then ever so gently re-tapped the hole. During the re-tap process, the brass actually spun itself out the backside where the thermostat would go.
The new sensor went right into the newly tapped hole, a little bit of play was noticed as the start, so to avoid any leaks, blue silicone was used on the threads and the new sensor slowly wrenched in until snug, not 100% flush, but secure to not leak.
For good measure, I reassmbled everything but left the coolant out overnight to allow silicone to dry. I'll refill and bleed system this evening.
Thanks to all for the help.
