Starter Replacement Trouble on '90 900SPG

Hello All,
This seems stupid, but is there a trick to unfastening the bolts holding the starter on my '90 900SPG?
It seems that the bracket surrounding both bolts prevents putting a wrench around it, and my largest socket, 16mm, seems to be too small.
Maybe I just need a larger socket, but it seems the bracket may interfere with a larger socket too.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ed
