I'm wondering the same thing about my own recent 1990 SPG(?) purchase. My car does have a sun visor with V rated tire info, but there's several other things that have occurred to this car over its 21 year life that make it non-standard. It was in an accident at some point in its life so half of the passenger-side front fender was replaced, along with the hood. The hood was easy to tell because it has SAAB logos on the side (an SPG wouldn't have those). According to the hood's VIN sticker, it was donated from a '91 convertible automatic. During that repair, they also resprayed the car with a clear-coat which was non-standard on 1990s and also added pin-stripes. Ugh.
All this said, I'm leaning towards thinking it did start out life as an SPG, as my mechanic believes it is one. I read there is some info , I'll probably put it through a restoration, so I'm not too worried about those pin stripes and extra SAAB badges.
I read somewhere that there is a manufacturing code visible if you look inside the door panels. I'll probably take mine off soon anyway as one of the windows is moving slower than 'normal'
