Hi folks,
A while back, I posted about potentially acquiring an '84 8V NA 4dr with a T37 that wouldn't leave 1st.
When I finally went and drove the car myself, it drove perfectly, so I took it home. I sat for a while and I finally got it on the road over the weekend. All seemed well for a while...
The first sign of trouble came backing up a hill. More than a touch of throttle on in reverse and a curious whine can be heard... a touch more and it slips--the whole car shudders...
The second sign of trouble came after going up a big hill (Vancouver's famous The Cut) on the highway at ~70km/h. It was holding in 2nd all the way up and seemed to be doing very well. After exiting the highway shortly after the hill, parking, powering down for 10 minutes, then getting back in to do a short trip, it behaved very strangely--1st would be fine, then when it would want to shift to 2nd, it was like both 2nd and revere were engaging at the same time--it was like 1st ok, 2nd, THROW ON THE BRAKES! It was a short trip so I threw it in 1, got to the destination, parked for 10 minutes, got back in, tried again, and it was fine. It was fine the rest of the evening. The fluid is still the right colour but definitely smells worst after last night than it did when I first got it.
I don't want to throw much money/time at it before I call it a day and convert it to a 5sp (the car drives wonderfully-one of the nicest C900s suspension/steering/lack of body flex/noise I've ever driven!)... but when it works, this T37 feels great--the shifts are nearly imperceptible, and I rather like the relaxed sort of feel it imparts upon the C900 driving experience!
Any thoughts appreciated!
Bests,
