Yes, you need to support the upper a-arm.
- Remove the two pin/bolts from the lower ball joint, so it can be slid out of the lower a-arm.
- Don't remove the upper, let it support the knuckle.
You won't be able to get the CV shaft out of the hub without the clearance provided by having the tie-rod removed. I never remove the tie-rod from the rack, I pop it at the taper. This preserves alignment. If you take the nut off it, and replace it upside down, you can use it as a surface to safely apply an air hammer, and the rod end should pop right out of the knuckle.
Removing the whole knuckle from the car is reasonable, but not particularly helpful.
