when i do em i take the axle out. It's much easier to get the tripod bearing off, which you will have to do to replace both boots.
As the others said, block the upper A arm, remove only the bolts from the lower ball joint. Separate tie rod, undo inner cv boot clamp on trans.
BUT before you do all that, loosen the drive axle nut.... just enough to break it loose from super tight (unstake it first. Don't loosen all the way, wheel bearing damage can occur).
Loosen the nut by setting the park brake, car in gear if manual, p if AT...
fit the right size socket(32mm?) and breaker bar, and use a car jack to break loose the bolt. Sounds weird, works GREAT. You may have to have someone hold the brakes as well to keep the car from moving.
once the nut is loose jack up the car and take it the rest of the way off. If you don't do this first, you will not be able to get the axle off the hub!
when you have all the other stuff done, separate the axle from the trans and move it down. Now lightly knock the axle out w/ a block of wood and a hammer. boom! axle out. Now you can work on it on a work bench.
take off the tripod bearing and carefully knock it off or use a puller if necessary. You can now change both boots and grease w/ molygraph grease. Just slide them off the end of the driveshaft. i just order grease from saabsite. it's cheap. have used generic molygraph grease too. better safe that sorry w/ axle stuff.
if the tripod bearing seems loose replace it now, and be sure to put new grease.
cheers!
