I've done this on my back with tall jack stands, and on a lift, and on the ground with the engine/transmission out. that last one is the only one I liked.... Justin is very correct, the mess of hydrastic fluid... ugly.
one thing that you can do is.... drain all the fluid out. take the belt off the power steering pump, and drive to a self serve car wash and invest some money there...lots of LOW pressure soap and LOW pressure rinse to get the area clean. some have degreaser setting for engines and that works too. if you have a ramp you may be able to drive one wheel up on it before you start, helps to wash under the side. be very careful if you use a ramp!
Removing the belt means you can't hurt the pump (with no fluid in it) and of course this all means no power steering at all. it really is only difficult when turning the wheels at rest.
