Ok, first I have to say I am very rough on my manual '88 C900Turbo but I bought her used off of ebay back in July 2004 with 150K from a second owner- she now has 240K. I've been trailing a light duty trailer for about 5-6 yrs when I need to. My Saab C900T is a legend with my friends!
For the last 5 years I have been trailing this open bed light duty trailer LOADED with reenacting gear on summer weekends. Prior to that and as soon as I purchased her I was taking trips with 3 ft of gear stacked on the roof racks and 2 other loaded passengers on road trips (one 900 mile RT).
Although I have experienced all other kinds of C900 issues, my tranny remains strong- I have been careful with it while loaded down and double check my fluid levels, etc.(factory recommended 10W30) This is the original transmission. I've had the engine out and disassembled once for several months- a simple blown headgasket repair turned very wrong (broken top of upper timing chain guide while removing head cover-DOH!)Replaced many of the engine parts while it was out but, again, nothing to the tranny except replaced the fluid (10W30). Got her back together and she ran like new. BTW- after all that loading the magnetic drain plug had very little filings, etc. to clean off.
I am not saying you'd want to buy my Saab but I am saying that trailering is not necessarily the worst thing. Loading up a roof rack and packing an interior is worse. I'd be looking at the overall condition, particularly looking at the interior-headliner, etc. will give a good idea of how the C900 was treated. A thorough mechanical exam by an accomplished Saab mechanic, etc.. I'm far more concerned with rust than seeing a trailer hitch!
