Some questions about purchasing a c900 convertible...

Hello. Apologies in advance for the ramble.
I wanted to ask the board, as I really enjoy reading it and it's guided my thinking to this point, about working on a 900 for a beginning mechanic.
I have had Volvo 240s, three of them, actually, over the last decade. Obviously, I love the cars, and I fully intended to buy another, but I am always tempted by a c900 convertible. I had a '78 99 in college and it was still my favorite car, by far, despite its failings as a reliable driver, and I just love SAABs.
I am still a beginner when it comes to mechanical things. I've done some things to 240s using Bentley and Brickboard-- brakes, thermostat, plugs, swapped off a door, stereo-- but nothing super technical. Is it possible to learn to work on a 900? Volvo guys go nuts when you talk about SAABs-- tight engine bay, rare parts-- but I wanted to put it to folks who really know these things.
So: provided I find a Bentley and take my time, is it possible to do work on these cars if you're not an expert mechanic?
And where does one find the parts? Volvo has IPD, Groton... Seems like I'm hunting a lot for SAAB stuff in my research. Is that accurate?
Finally, I am considering a c900 convertible. Are there years to avoid for sure?
Thanks in advance for any replies-- I appreciate it.
