I say go for it!

I'm not too mechanically-inclined, but the Bentley for Saabs helps tremendously. I find them to be fairly easy to work on, but I leave things like water pumps and head gaskets to the professionals. Rust can be fatal to an otherwise great 900 (which I'm dealing with on my convertible -- but it drives super at 195k miles despite the rust-cancer).

As far as parts, saabnet site sponsors like eeuroparts or saabsite are good at fulfilling most needs. Otherwise, a junkyard or ebay usually can fulfill the rest (if not a member of this site).

I've had two convertibles, and two hatches, as well as two 9000's and a 9-5. The 900 is my favorite!
