jkel,
it's the lock mechanism that gives you those troubles. I'm not a car body specialist, but I'd suggest that there must be some means for hatch door adjustment (alignment) that may include hinge adjustment and those rubber things that you should be able to find on both sides of the body panels (driver's and passenger's).
So I'd start with the following:
- close hatch door and visually check if it's properly aligned and adjusted. Perform adjustment if necessary (you may need to search for factory body manual for this procedure or carry this out by intuition)
- if or after door is adjusted and properly aligned then remove hatch door card and proceed with lock inspection. Check the lock parts for wear and tear (and they may turn out to be in need for replacement); they only hatch lock adjustment that I'm aware of is some plastic nut on a rod that determines the freeplay for outside lock handle.
To my experience it's not the best service that I've ever carried out (you're to work with outstretched arms and there's some dirt and rust that is constantly coming down and damn it hurts and it hits your eyes!).
Good luck,
Zig
