Hatch struts do appear to have contributed to the hatch "popping open". I believe struts I installed were for a spoiler hatch which being heavier require more gas force to overcome additional weight.
With the spoiler struts, the resting downward force of hatch was almost neutral. With the non spoiler struts there is a weight bias (toward closed)on hatch while closed. I think this downward force helps latch remain engaged on stiker plate to oppose forces acting on latch ie rough road, gusty tail winds etc.
Unfortunatley even with correct struts and adjusting striker and latch to what appeared optimum ,hatch still popped(Not as pronounced) open with a little wiggling and foot pushes from the inside of hatch to simulate these forces.
Changing the contact angle of the striker plate and latch arm by shimming the front screw of striker plate to body seems to have given a better angle of contact of latch parts.Factory striker install is directly to car body. Car is accident free but slight wear and tear of latch parts seems to make this neccessary short of replacing latch. So far hatch has remained latched even while testing on some rough roads! Thanks for all the good responses! Ill follow up on this problem .
