Interesting, looks like you used 3M's 80 which looks quite appropriate (for rubber, vinyl etc + high temp)... I haven't seen it locally... I used 90... not sure if there are differences, but the instructions on it were to spray both surfaces, wait (something like 3-5 minutes?) + then press together... I found if it didn't stick right away (which it usually did too soon before I was ready actually) it didn't stick... also important not to get too much on the headliner material or it might not "dry" enough + saturate through the cloth when you push (did that once also)... hard stuff to clean up (iirc I used acetone)!
I run into this kind of issue doing veneers on speaker cabinets also... except the tack time is much longer with veneer glue (contact cement is not very good for veneer work)... a vacuum press would be best, but I just use a lot of clamps + pile on my old physics + engineering textbooks for good measure (like your sand)... bags full of sand might be a good idea there too (would need a lot of sand!)... in my case, those surfaces are always flat - it's just a matter of fighting moisture induced bubbling in the veneer surface itself...
anyway, hope all these tips are useful to someone someday searching the bb... I mostly followed fixmysaab + a few tips from here... very helpful, but there's always a few surprises ;-)...
James...
