First of all, yeah I had a(nother) brainfart, you're right Jeff, the cable goes from the distributor to the ignition amplifier on the left inner fender not the LH ECU but that makes replacing it a bit easier as well. The terminal ends and little black boot for the connector are available from EagleDay.com and the white plastic connector itself can be salvaged (on this car anyway). The connector element that's mounted on the distributor comes with the Saab distributor rebuild kit #7588312 which appears to still be available from various site sponsors although the connector on this car is also intact and OK to re-use. It was just the cable itself that was my problem. Ordinary wiring is no issue (wish I had a nickle for every mile of automotive wiring I've replaced) but creating a new shielded cable is outside my usual service realm. The better AMP type connector (like on the injectors) started being used by Bosch at the Hall effect connector somewhere around '89 or '90 and I noticed that on my 1987 and later cars a slightly different cable was used and they are still fairly supple and intact. Yet another 1986 wiring complication I guess. I considered just swapping the entire ignition harness with a later one but I'm gonna go the easy route for now since all the other wires in that harness are OK. I like Simon's suggestion (good to hear from you sir) of just using a 3 conductor cable and maybe wrapping it with metal tape to shield it and that's probably what I'll do. I've got nothing to lose by trying and that's all stuff I have around the shop. Thanks SabbStalker but this is an '86 car with the Hall effect in the distributor and I want to maintain that set-up and just replace the crusty old cable. Are you referring to the CSP (crank position sensor?) on a car with the Hall effect at the crank pulley like certain later model Saab 900s? Thanks much to all of you. I'll do a follow up post when the job is done.
