Your '88 unit will pop right in with no complications. You'll just have to resign yourself to adjusting the shift linkage after the unit is installed. It's not all that bad, two pins (drill bits, allen wrenches, whatever) through two holes and tighten the clamp and your done BUT don't fail to do it or your new gearbox will be very unhappy. On the old V4 Saab the pin had threads on both ends so you just moved the nut from one end to the other and as you tightened it down the pin popped out. Must have been too good of an idea and had to be un-invented.
