Since a hammer and drift was useless, I made my own press to remove the pin: center an 8mm nut over the wide end of the pin on top of the shift rod; push the pin up through the nut using a heavy 5" C-clamp screwing up from below. I left the nut on the pin, backed off almost to the end, so the swivel plate on the C-clamp didn't slip around.
You will still have to align the shifter to the new transmission. Pay attention to the reverse light switch in the shift housing.
