Buy a brass hose connector that is barbed on both ends. Buy a grommet that it fits into. Use a hacksaw to cut off the valve from the tank. Then use a tapered hand reamer or drill to enlarge the hole just enough to fit the grommet in. There will be enough friction when you insert the brass barbed tube inside to make an airtight seal. Push a short length of vacuum hose over the end and connect it to an external one way valve that you can buy for a few dollars at NAPA.
I'm big into originality, but after having so many of these leak I feel like this is a better than factory solution and its been working for me for years. It's especially nice on ABS cars where theres more stuff over there to get in the way of removing the tank.
